TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I teach English in all its variations.
I'm comfortable teaching in a wide variety of situations and settings.

Kindergarten and Elementary School:

I've taught classes in reading and writing to 1st and 4th graders at a private academy and ran the 2nd grade 'homework help' sessions.  I've worked frequently as a substitute teacher in the public school system.  As  a tutor, I've worked with a number of Generation 1.5 students, including autistic and language-delayed students.  I love working with kids!  Kindergarten through second grade are my favorites.

Middle School and High School:

I spent a year as an English Teacher at a secondary school in London, England.  In the U.S., I've taught literature and writing courses to middle school students at a private academy and worked as a substitute teacher in public middle schools and high schools.  I've been a tutor for the literature subject exam and the SAT (verbal) and coached students through the college application essay process.  I also designed and co-taught an extensive creative writing workshop course for pre-teens at a fine arts camp (20 hours per week for four weeks).

University Lecturer/Instructor:

I've taught nine distinct university courses in writing and literature, including Focus on 18th Century Literature (Honors).  In addition to teaching several academic writing courses, I've taught professional writing courses like Introduction to Business Communications, Business Writing, and Technical Writing.   I also taught and graded sections for two upper-level literature courses (British Literature: 1700-1930 and comparative literature -- Themes in World Literature:  Human Rights).  As a course instructor for a test prep company, I prepared university students for the verbal reasoning portion of the medical school exam (MCAT).

International Students and Non-Native Speakers:

I've taught adults, teens and kids from around the world.  I've worked at language institutes/programs, language camps and/or language schools in Brazil, England, Moldova, Scotland, Slovakia and the U.S.

Interesting international experiences include . . .

Teaching two consecutive summers in Chisinau, Moldova for JDFP
(Junior Faculty Development Program), a program of
the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs

Teaching in Slovakia at Universzita Mateja Bela as a Masaryck Fellow for Foundation for a Civil Society

My professional TEFL credential is the Cambridge Celta (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).  Actually, I've taught English to all age groups, kids included.  I've taught advanced beginners to near-fluent students.  My approach to language learning is creative and I use a wide variety of exercises, activities and conversation games, so if you'd like to improve your English and have fun doing it,
